Many thanks to Clare Griffin for this final report from the Donosti Cup in San Sebestien. Ed
The Isle of Wight Schools Under 15’s football team returned from San Sebastien, Spain on Saturday night after a successful run in the Donosti Cup. Competing in the Under 16’s age group, they were clear winners of their group, winning all three matches.
Progressing to the last 16 they found the opposition and intense heat more challenging, and despite a great team effort, were knocked out.
Their first match was against Coerver Select, a team drawn from all over Australia; which they won 4 nil. The second and third matches were against Spanish sides, Donibaneko FT and Kontadores Gaztelekua. Their last 16 match was against another Spanish side, Barundi.
The Donosti Cup is annual competition which attracts teams from all over the world – including South America, United States, Australia, Africa and all parts of Europe.
At Tuesday evenings presentation evening, coach Mike Peake, paid tribute to the boys, whose commitment has been an inspiration.
They have without exception been an example to other sportsmen – not only on the pitch but also by organising fund raising activities and events throughout the year to help pay for the trip.
All the boys received commemorative awards and several special awards were also presented to the following:
