In early October 2023, Gilly Harland, a beloved mother of two boys and a dedicated science and psychology teacher at Christ The King College, was struck by a car on Newport Road in Cowes.
The incident left the community shaken, but it also sparked a remarkable display of support and solidarity.
Emergency response and charitable initiative
The response from emergency services on the day was described as “incredible”. Gilly and her husband, Chris Quinton, deeply moved by the support they received, decided to channel this positivity into something impactful.
They kicked off a series of charity events, with a specific focus on raising funds for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Successful fundraising event
The first of these events, dubbed “Killer Karaoke,” was held in late November. The event featured games of “killer pool,” karaoke sessions, and a raffle, all aimed at collecting donations.
The community turned out in force, contributing to a total of £1,483.47 raised in just one day.
Representatives from the Air Ambulance team joined Gilly and Chris for a cheque presentation ceremony last weekend.
Positive steps towards recovery
Despite the challenges she has faced, Chris says that Gilly is making steady progress in her recovery. With the unwavering support of her community and several hospital visits for surgery, she has begun the journey back to normalcy.
As she marks her birthday this week, there is a sense of optimism and celebration in the air.
Killer Pool Part 2
Continuing their efforts to support Gilly and raise funds for the Air Ambulance, the community is gearing up for the second event in the series.
“Killer Pool Part 2” is scheduled for this Saturday, 24th February, starting from 3pm at the Kingston Arms on Newport Road in Cowes.
Families and children are not only welcomed, but encouraged to join in the festivities, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere for all attendees.
