Isle of Wight Venus Awards: Public vote due to open

There’s been a buzz on Isle of Wight social media over the last few months about a new awards programme dedicated to recognising and rewarding business women on the Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight Venus Awards
The Venus Awards originated in Dorset in 2009, but has now grown across the South region, also hitting Bristol, Bath, Somerset, Southampton, Portsmouth, Sussex, Devon, and even Oxfordshire and Birmingham.

The categories
During the latter part of 2015 Islanders were asked to nominate women in the nine categories

  • Business Mother of the Year (public vote)
  • Customer Service Award (public vote)
  • Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Home Based Business Award
  • Influential Woman of the Year (public vote)
  • Inspirational Woman Award
  • Lifetime Achievement Award

The shortlist for several of categories were announced back in December and those shortlisted for the categories that go to public vote (on 20th January for seven days) were announced last week.

#AgainstTheOdds
For the sake of transparency, I was very flattered to have been nominated in four categories for the Venus Awards. I was then selected to go through to the next stage for the Most Influential Woman Award for my work in founding and running OnTheWight.

With the help of the brilliant Julian Winslow we put together a one minute video (not something that’s natural for me as I’m usually behind the camera) which was then submitted to the sponsor, the County Press, to judge along with 18 others.

The editor of the County Press, Alan Marriott, decided not to put my entry through to the public vote. Hey ho, it was #AgainstTheOdds that he’d do anything but, c’est la vie.

Given Julian gave up his time to film and edit the video, I thought I’d share his work below. He’s a star! Thanks also to lovely Luke Bridgeman for helping out at the last hour by adding some on-screen credits.

Final in March
Best of luck to all the women who have been shortlisted.

Once the public vote has been completed (it opens on 20th January for seven days) the three women in each of the categories that has the most votes will go through to the final that takes place in March at Cowes Yacht Haven.

It’s been a very long and drawn-out process for those nominated, but the end is in sight.

Alan Marriott must have his head in the sand if he doesn’t think that what you’ve created with On the Wight is influential.

I’m not going to comment on the other people who he did select as being influential, but his criteria for what constitutes ‘influence’ is quite different from my interpretation.

Cracking video!

Yes; it seems that arsey Alan is scared of saintly Sally.

Asking Alan Marriott to nominate you for an award for Most Influential Business Woman Award is a bit like asking Wightlink to nominate Red Funnel as best ferry company.
Conflict of media interests methinks…
You’d get a vote from me!

I’m not keen on the idea of women only awards, but that aside, I’m very disappointed that you weren’t put through to the public vote. I’ve been following (from abroad) since the early days of the blog and have always come to your website first thing every day to keep up with what’s been happening on the island. ps. It’s good to finally see the face behind… Read more »

Very strange criteria for influence. Of the 5 women on the IW Council, Julie Jones-Evans has the least influence as an opposition member with no group to support her after she left the Conservatives. All the other 4 are part of the Independent administration – two are on the Executive, one is Chair of Planning and the other Vice Chair of the Council. I know where I… Read more »

It’s based on nominations they received, and not just on one job. Julie, for instance, does a lot more than just council work. There’s a life outside County Hall :)

But the nomination just describes her as ‘councillor’, not ‘councillor, fundraiser, general good egg, etc’.

Julia Jones-Evans leaves a meeting of the full council before 9pm when fracking is about to be discussed. Come on, how can she be nominated for an Influential Woman Award? How can she influence anything when she is absent when important issues such as this are being discussed?

Good on yer Sally although I have some reservation about calling the awards the patronising “Venus” awards and a winner of the “Networker of the Year” category might appear self-fulfilling. :-))

Why not “Influential Island Woman of the Year”?

I must have missed this article last week, but can safely say Sally that you were better off not being in the finalists. I’ve watched women having to effectively ‘pimp’ themselves all over Facebook in the last week to get their ‘friends’ to vote for them. Very tacky. I did vote for a couple of people I know who were up for awards, but had to give… Read more »

Well done Vix for your getting to the last three in the ‘Influential Women” category given the sponsors.

(It is a shame that the same sponsors appear to have discarded Sally- maybe the independence of OTW journalism is a threat to the Island Establishment?)
