The Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s flagship locomotive Calbourne is back on the tracks…just in time for the annual Isle of Wight Steam Show this weekend.
After being off-line for several months to have new tyres fitted, the Southern Railway liveried tank engine returned this week.
A special run out
The return was celebrated with a special run out on Tuesday evening, which saw Island dignitaries join members of the public enjoying the railway’s Tuesday evening Fish and Chip ride.
Isle of Wight East MP Joe Robertson, Isle of Wight High Sheriff Graham Biss and Isle of Wight Council members Jonathan Bacon, Vanessa Churchman, Michael Lilley and Karl Love were among the VIPs to experience the newly shod Calbourne.
History of the locomotive
After beginning life in the Nine Elms engineering works in London, Calbourne’s early years were spent based at Fratton and then Exeter, passing into the ownership of the Southern Railway in 1923.
In 1925 she was shipped to the Isle of Wight as part of a major modernisation of the Island’s railways.
Calbourne completed her most recent overhaul during 2020 and returned to steam in time for the railway’s 50th Anniversary in 2021.
Renovation work
This summer her wheels were removed and sent to the West Devon Railway, where craftsmen fitted new steel tyres onto the cast-iron wheels.
Following the ride from Havenstreet to Smallbrook and then to Wootton, guests enjoyed a fish and chip supper.
Biss: An integral part of Isle of Wight life
Graham Biss, High Sheriff, said,
“It was great to see another step forward for the steam railway.
“This wonderful attraction is an integral part of Isle of Wight life.”
Robertson: Fish and chips and a ride on the steam railway
Joe Robertson MP said,
“It is lovely to be here and witness Calbourne being back on track.
“Fish and chips and a ride on the steam railway…two typically British things to enjoy on a stunning Isle of Wight evening.”
Morgan-Huws: We keep our locomotives in tip-top condition
Marc Morgan-Huws, Isle of Wight Steam Railway chief executive, said,
“Having Calbourne back for the Bank Holiday is perfect.
“We have a scheduled programme of maintenance to keep our locomotives in tip-top condition.”
Isle of Wight Steam Fair
The four-day Wightlink-sponsored Isle of Wight Steam Fair begins on Friday and runs through the Bank Holiday weekend until Monday.
Steam engines, a fairground, and rides on the railway’s trains will be available to show-goers over the weekend.
