The Isle of Wight council, led by a majority of Independent councillors, has tonight voted to increase the Island’s council tax by 1.99%, just under the 2% that the Conservative-led Government has ruled would trigger an automatic referendum.

With this raise, it’s anticipated that an additional £500,000+ will be be raised.
It was only near the start of February that the council heard what the limit of council tax would be.
Prior to this, the Island Independent’s budget proposal called for a council tax freeze in 2014/15.
The council has stated that it has a budget gap of £28m over the next three years, due to Government funding cuts.
