IW Council: No Free Swimming. Do They Want Healthy Islanders?

We’ve heard yesterday on IW Radio news that the IW Council voted on Tuesday night to rejected a government proposal to allow all school children and over 60s to swim for free in public swimming baths.

The reason given for this was to save the council £110,000.

The Isle of Wight council has a budget of over £300 MILLION pounds a year.

Clearly the expense would be a drop in the ocean (pun intended).

The story that directly followed that was a about how type 2 Diabetes was increasing on the Island.

One of the ways of combating type 2 Diabetes is to physical exercise.

Swimming being a great way of doing this for the elderly.

How can the IW Council justify not spending this money when they’ve made such a big thing of trying to make the Island healthier? They’ve even made it part of the Eco Island campaign.

We would in the normal course of writing an article, carry out research by contacting those involved, asking them for their side of the story, but as you may well know, Claire Robertson, head of the IW Council press office took it upon herself to bar VentnorBlog and all of its readers from finding out about all things council.
