IW Council Recommends: Sell Ryde Theatre. Close Shanklin Theatre (Updated)

The future of two of the three theatres that the Isle of Wight council looks after for the Island have once again come up for discussion (original discussions of closure first floated in 2007).

Live Coverage Ryde & Shanklin Theatre Closures!A cabinet meeting on 19 January 2010 will decide the future of both Ryde and Shanklin Theatres.

The Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy, Tourism, Leisure – George Brown – and Planning and the Cabinet Member for Resources – Peter Bingham recommend the following …

Ryde Theatre – the only theatre on the Island of it’s size that can host standing gig – be sold to a mysteriously unnamed “not-for-profit local organisation that aims to use the building to provide music-based education activities and offer it for community use.”

Shanklin Theatre is recommended for closure.

We’re reading through the twelve page background paper and will bring you more when we find it.

Obviously feel free to look through it to and highlight any points in the comment below that you think are of interest.

Update 18.Jan.10: David Pugh says that he’s keen to save Shanklin Theatre.

Unbelievable – Shanklin Theatre is the best theatre on the island – none of the others even comes close – nothing to do with planning for flats there by any chance? (more empty properties looming and a loss of a great community asset). Once closed, our last true theatre will be gone for good! I am disgusted personally, no chances, no chance for remissions – why don’t… Read more »

Shanklin Theatre will close at the beginning of April 2010……it will re-open at the end of April 2010 under community ownership.

The term shut down is just official language

This is the plan supported by the Town Council and its elected representatives

Ryde Theatre now has a ‘platform’ to stand on

The relevent bits re Shanklin Theatre are: “In this proposition a local community group would be specially formed for the purpose of managing the theatre and would seek to ‘acquire’ the theatre from the Council in accordance with the provisions of its Community Asset Transfer Policy. 7.6 This policy can only to applied to “buildings and landholdings which are no longer required for delivery of its (Council)… Read more »

hi, would be good if the buyers of ryde theatre put it for the public, especially more for the youngsters, aged 14 up. a good idea would be for platform one to take it over, use offices as a college base and turn others into recording studios and proper base for performances. also if still there please keep the organ!!!!!!used to be one of the best inthe… Read more »

There is one thing you can be sure on. No public opinions will be taken into account, and the council will decide to do whatever they want to do – usually whichever benefits them the most financially or personally.

As far as I have read, it does appear that closure is a formality to allow the theatres move to new ownership. The council needs to make sure they act quickly to get the theatres back open again. A big problem is that of the maintenance, which IWC seems to have failed to do for a good few years. However, there is so much potential for the… Read more »

It reads as if Ryde Theatre can be acquired for £50k? How much more will it cost to re-house the council employee’s working below? I welcome Platform 1 being ideal to sustain the place as a music college and venue but I fear for musicians not associated with Platform 1 for fair opportunities to perform and mostly ‘cost effective’ college performances. I also think the freehold to… Read more »

When I was a boy, there was a saying, “Ryde for pride, Newport for hot dinners!” Where is the pride of Ryde now, when it’s fine hall with a valuable and equally fine organ is being disposed of for less than the cost of that ridiculous “Town Square” that our beloved leader has provided in Shanklin? Why don’t the Ryde folk (I was born there) rise up… Read more »

Ryde is also the best theatre on the Island superman. Both are good at doing the job they are designed to do. Unfortunately, the council have made it difficult for both theatres to run correctly. At least now, Ryde can get on with doing what it should have been doing for years; that is doing music. I hope that this will not be the only activity there… Read more »

Much as I’d love to see all the theatres survive as venues I think the reality is that there simply aren’t enough events to keep them all going, Ventnor Winter Gardens, Ryde Theatre and Shanklin Theatre are all big buildings that cost huge amounts to maintain in terms of maintenance, heating and staffing. But how many times a year are each of them filled? I suspect less… Read more »

It is clear that currently, the theatres can’t continue as they are and need to boost their number of performances. However, as you say, there is a limited number of events, but obviously, some events, such as the celeb visits that have been popular recently, can provide more. However, the theatres need to diversify and see themselves as multi-use “spaces,” which helps to finance their continued use… Read more »

You say there’s plenty of opportunity for the space to be used Adam, would you like to start the list?

I have a long list which I have already sent in to IWC. Hopefully, they will have a read and consider detailing some of them to bidders who wish to run the theatre.

The Town Council proposal contains a long list of extra/alternative usage as well as the normal theatre usage

You raise very good observations and I fear this is what a lot of people feel but in particular, I know personally that Ryde has not been given a fair crack of the whip and the figures conjured up are inaccurate. Ryde theatre does not lose much money though I cannot dispute the costs of repairs but the council have not spent anything on repairs for so… Read more »

The problems with multi-use in the past was the practicalities. Set-ups, pack downs, booking clashes, even more regular cleaning goodness forbid.

Hey Muso-activator, what you say about the venue is spot-on. You know more than most people how the council has tried desperately hard to discourage people and events. It’s not about lack of events as such but about having owners that are keen to put on events. Adam; I too have given a long list of clubs/events that could be included as day activities and or mid-week… Read more »
