The Isle of Wight Dog Training Society, the oldest training club on the Island, is delighted to announce that it has reached the national finals of the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Annual Awards organised by the Kennel Club.

The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme is the largest dog training programme in the UK which promotes socially acceptable dogs through its comprehensive dog training programme. Created sixteen years ago, the Awards recognise the hard work, efforts and contribution made by dedicated canine enthusiasts.

Competition open to 2,000 clubs
By promoting the benefits that dogs bring to the Society, the Awards are a way of rewarding Dog Training Clubs and organisations that work towards responsible dog ownership. From promoting the Scheme’s curriculum, educational talks, poop scoop campaigns to sponsored dog walking etc, all aspects of canine awareness were included in the entry details.

The competition was open to over 2000 UK Kennel Club Registered and Listed Status Clubs who have hosted Good Citizen or Puppy Foundation courses in the last 12 months.

Events in February
The prestigious event will be held at the Kennel Club’s London headquarters on 8th February, where the awards will be presented by the Chairman of the Kennel Club. Representatives of the club, together with their dogs, have been invited to attend.

The Isle of Wight Dog Training Society has been providing training for dog lovers all over the Island since the 1950’s and is a non-profit making club run by volunteers. Members of all ages are welcome and weekly classes include agility for fun, puppy and pet dog obedience through to competition standard obedience, and flyball. Affiliated to the Kennel Club, the club regularly runs Bronze, Silver and Gold Good Citizen progress tests for members interested in achieving those levels of competence.

Keeping it fun
Claire Whitchurch, Chairman of the IOWDTS commented, “We are thrilled to have been selected as finalists for this award. We are all volunteers and our trainers pass on their knowledge, expertise and time just for the love of dogs. Our club is open to anyone, any breed, rescue dogs, puppies or anyone with just an interest in doing a little more with their dog.

“Most of all, it is a social activity for our members and their dogs – we all have fun, that is what is important and is the key to the success of our club. All fingers and paws are crossed for the 8th February.”
