Thanks to Steve for this report from the weekend’s rowing regatta. Ed
With both the Men’s and Ladies Senior crews missing through injury and exam commitments Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club had to rely on their Coastal Junior crews and cadet members to maintain the good start to the season at Woolston Regatta on Saturday (25th May) – the home Regatta of Southampton Rowing Club.
The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of James Cleary, Stephen Johnson, Ollie Gove and Adam Edwards, with Sam Brading coxing did not disappoint – claiming their third consecutive win in a close race with main rivals Lymington.
Fourth place for ladies junior team
There was also a very encouraging performance from the Ladies Coastal Junior Four of – Steph Kissick, Heidi Kissick, Michaela Martin and Alicja Stokes with Sam Brading coxing once again – who finished fourth in their first race at this status following their promotion after last week’s win in the Novice Fours.
J16 Sculler Harvey Kirkby produced two impressive performances in two different single sculling events – the Men’s Novice Sculls and the Boys J16 Sculls – finishing second in both – and in both cases less than a length behind the winner.
Great effort from J14 squad
The Club’s J14 squad were also in attendance – competing in two events – Matthew Jeacock, Joe Groves, Jacob Redstone and Joel Smith with Max Reeve coxing competed in the Men’s Novice Fours against much older opposition and did well to finish sixth in their heat in their first race at this level.
Matthew and Joel were then joined by Dominic Douglas, Tom Kearney and cox Austin Smith and competed in the Boys J16 event – again against older opposition – where they finished in fourth place.
Dale Buckett and Sam Corney contested the Men’s Senior Pairs event but suffered from their lack of practise in recent weeks – finishing in fifth place.
Finally a mixed crew of James Cleary, Steph Kissick, Sam Corney and Alicja Stokes with Sam Brading in the coxswains seat once more competed in the traditional finale to the regatta but were hampered by their earlier exertions finishing in eighth place.
