Quay Arts welcomes Theatre of Angels whose new play, Legacy presents the inspiring tale of the real-life story of the subject of the piece, Dorothy Whitney Elmhirst.

Legacy by Theatre of AngelsWhen one of the 20th century’s leading social activists sits down in the Bahamas to write her memoirs, the chance appearance of a mysterious stranger leads her to confront more than she’d expected.

Dorothy was a confidante to some of history’s greatest minds including Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt. It also reveals her Dorothy’s tragic and gripping life story.

With an inner world of profound tragedy, Dorothy Whitney Elmhirst created an extraordinary outer world of creativity, optimism and spiritual searching.

Her circle of inspirational friendships ranged from Aldous Huxley to Rabindranath Tagore, Cecil Beaton to Eleanor Roosevelt and Michael Chekhov to Mahatma Gandhi. But how did Dorothy Whitney Elmhirst fulfil her destiny as co-founder of the Dartington Hall community.

The play begins in 1959, when after surviving a series of heart attacks; Dorothy writes her most intimate memoir on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. As Dorothy reflects upon her life, an intrusive Biographer arrives to probe hidden and half-forgotten memories for his book.

This theatre piece promises to reveal the mysteries of this tragic and compelling heroine.
