Thanks to Louise for this update on the exciting Lego Tower attempt due to take place on 2nd April. In her own words. Ed
On Saturday, Gill and Marcus Elsom ran their usual National Autistic Society (NAS) Saturday Lego club at the Riverside. But this week, it was with a difference.
They had their work cut out for them, as they needed to organise the room into two very different zones. They had to split it in half, one side for normal activity and the other for step building in preparation for the tower challenge on 2nd April.
The Lego also had to be split between the two rooms at the Riverside Centre and get everything ready by 10am. Thanks to lots of help they were ready by 10.15.
After a slow start, around half the kids built a step. The rest had decided that they just wanted to play with Lego as they normally do at LegoClub (which they had guessed would happen). At the end of LegoClub the kids had completed seven steps. It was a brilliant morning and the kids had a wonderful time.
Volunteers build Lego step next door
With the help of quite a few volunteers I ran a public Lego step build workshop in the main function room from 10.30 – 12.30.
Twenty one adults and eighteen children turned up. One of the parents brought along some fabulous home-baked cakes and a great time was had by all.
Paul and Tracey Freeman of King Textiles Ltd had very kindly printed up a whole load of t-shirts for us to give out to everyone as a keepsake and surprised me by creating three very special edition Reaching High for Autism mugs which will either go into a raffle or be auctioned off on the day.
All children were also presented with a certificate of achievement and had their photo taken.
Join this week’s workshop
We currently have 41 steps built and are almost half way there and only have a handful of places left for people to book onto this Saturday’s workshop.
Anyone interested, needs to visit our Website and go to the Getting Involved page to find out more or phone 07827 308768.
22 schools now involved
We’re also delighted to be able to confirm that we now have 22 schools involved in our project who will also be receiving a good share of the 40,000 bricks after the main build event.
Business sponsorship is starting to come through and we’re delighted to see the support of quite a few island companies to include CC Training & Consultancy, Cornerways, Island Scientific Ltd and Esplanade Garage.
However our 50ft Lego ladder will have space for 300 company logos or their business details. Now need to encourage more individuals, families and Local Businesses to take a look at our Sponsor a Brick scheme found on our Getting Involved page.
