Lengthy diversions as road closure planned once again for road connecting upper to lower Ventnor

Island Roads say that one of the main roads in and out of Ventnor will be closed for ten to 15 shifts at some point between Friday 4th November 2022 and Friday 16th December 2022.

In 2016 the section of Newport Road between the top of Gills Cliff Road (by the fish and chip shop) and Down Lane (the road that goes up to the Downs) was closed for eight weeks, as Island Roads carried out work to reconstruct and resurface the Graben.

Period of closure
In recent months, visible signs of cracks in the road have appeared and Island Roads now say that at some point between the above dates the section of road will be closed for a period of approximately ten to 15 shifts to enable the next planned programme of carriageway and footway maintenance works to be completed.

They say the closure is required for safety purposes during surfacing and maintenance works and alternative routes will be signposted locally.

The closure will result in lengthy diversions for all vehicles, including the number three bus route.

Last time I saw it, it still had chips out of the glass where a Dornier shot it up. (although OI might have imagined this)

No, you didn’t imagine it, I remember seeing the chipped lens as well, some time ago now, when the lighthouse was open to the public.
