Letter: Is France’s housing model a blueprint for the UK’s rent affordability crisis?

The French have an interesting approach when it comes to housing. Many people rent, they don’t see bricks and mortar as an investment or money making opportunity, they see housing as providing a home.

Rents are set by government, and over recent years haven’t risen above 1% a year.

Renters are not allowed to spend more than 30% of their monthly income on rent, which ensures they have sufficient money leftover for food and other things.

Given the out of control exploitative housing market in the UK, might this not be a model we as a Country ought to be moving towards?
