Letter: Please keep your vintage feel and the nostalgia of a time gone by – beautiful, sunny, happy Island, please don’t die

News OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Jane Hardy, Kent. Ed

I do not live on the Island, I live in Kent. My mother lives in Rustington, Little Hampton. We love the Island.

We spent many wonderful summers on the Island in my youth and it was a beautiful place to experience with my lovely family.

I had a good childhood with plenty of fun and enjoyment on the Island every summer – it was a dreamlike place and as a grew older had a well kept vintage feel to it – stepping back in time (everywhere else on the mainland was pulled apart and modernised). The Isle of Wight had an elegant feel.

How sad to see your beautiful Sandown in ruins. I am horrified at how the glorious Hotels on the seafront look like something out of a horror movie set – not even made safe or boarded up – when I saw them I must admit I was extremely sad.

Levelling up funding
I just wanted to let you know that Little Hampton are getting £7 million of “levelling up funding”.

Bognor Regis are getting £12 million “levelling up” funding.

Please help the Isle of Wight’s council keep the Island in the loop of this money for the Island as it’s such a beautiful place and the people deserve better.

Beautiful sunny happy Island please don’t die
I am asking you,

“Please keep your vintage feel and the nostalgia of another time gone by – beautiful sunny happy Island please don’t die.”

Shop front makeover
In Desborough, Northamptonshire and Market Harborough they have done a shop front makeover where if people donate time the local council are helping them out with the materials, so they are making it look smarter on a shoe string.

I have also been thinking of an idea for you of asking the public for paint they are not using at home to get more done on your high streets?

Maybe ask for a TV programme shop fronts makeover?

People on the Mainland love your beautiful Island
Just wanted to pass on to you how much people on the Mainland love your beautiful Island, so please stick up for yourselves and get some help.

Levelling up should include the Island.

I am keeping my hopes up and my fingers crossed for Sandown seafront. I hope that you can keep a vintage feel to the Island, as it’s so refreshing to visit a place where some things are untouched.

I hope that this gives you some inspiration to help yourselves.

Love to you all, Jane Hardy
