Letter To The Editor: Council Cuts/Riverside Centre Newport

From time to time we receive letters from our readers who wish for them to be published on VB. This unedited letter from Brian Rushton of Newport which we received today, is one such request. Ed

I despair when I think about the likely impact cuts in funding in excess of £100,000 are likely to have on the Riverside Centre for the disabled, everyone knows what an asset this centre is to the island community and we should all be aware of the excellent job Letter To The Editor: Council Cuts/Riverside Centre Newportthey do.

I am further concerned that in addition to the funding cuts our Council is considering increasing the Riverside’s rental charge to £100,000 if this information is correct it is disgraceful. One must ask the question why such a valuable amenity built with public donations on what was not so valuable (former gas works) contaminated land must pay our Council what appears on the face of it an exorbitant rent, surely in view of the services the centre provides our Council ought to be funding the centre and permitting it use of the land rent free.

Our Council’s Director of resources is quoted saying “It has to be remembered that the Council is responsible for public money and it is in the interest of all Council tax payers that it gets a fair and reasonable rent for its properties in accordance with the terms of the existing leases in a sensible and professional manner”.

I would therefore put it to Mr. Burbage that our Council was not concerned about the rent which was due from the Quay Art Centre or the Jubilee buildings or the Green Sheds when our Council gifted these buildings and land to the Quay Art Centre and further does not appear overly concerned when renting out other buildings and land in Newport harbour at Seaclose Quay for use as a Boat and Bus museum also in the harbour we have all that is now the Odessa Boat Yard and Site Services buildings all being let to Council tenants either to make a profit or for boys toys! and all at peppercorn rents, please inform me Mr. Burbage how you can justify charging such a worthwhile amenity like the Riverside centre any rent whatsoever in such circumstances

Please accept that I do not wish to take anything away from the Quay Art Centre who excellently provide our community with the much needed arts facility or from the others I mentioned above in answer to Mr. Burbage’s statement, I am just using this example to show how unfair our Councils attitude towards the Riverside Centre appears.

Over these past years I have been one of our islands tax payers who also contributed to the above named establishments and made further donations towards the building of the Riverside Centre and I feel that I am entitled to know why the Riverside Centre is being treated in this abominable fashion and say that I disapprove of the proposed cuts and proposed rent rises and I would like to ask other tax payers to do the same, what sort of people do we have administering this Authority and where are our elected representatives?

Yours truly
Brian Rushton, Sea Street, Newport

Crisis talks over centre – A Riverside stakeholder meeting, which council officials have been invited to, is due to be held next Saturday, March 13, to discuss the centre’s future. I have in my possession a ‘(preliminary) scope of works-Riverside Centre, Newport-high dependency toilet area’ which outlines the investment/input into the provision of this facility by the Isle of Wight Council. The Riverside currently houses the only… Read more »

Ironic, realy – the “Changing Places” toilet – only one on the island – has just cost the council £20,000 about to be formaly opened. Now they want to shut it! Do they have ANY brains on that 4th. floor! I wonder which elected member will attend the grand opening.

It could be a metaphor for this administration.

Please God…don’t let Rushton be setting out his patch for another election gamble!! After all of the complaints he makes about noise from the Riverside Centre, Quay Arts and any event in the Quay, I would have thought he’d be happy to see it go!! Best of luck to Richard and the gang from RC though-it is a unique facility and probs the only true community centre… Read more »

Cuts in the resources available to the Riverside Centre is too important a subject to be concerned about the snide comments aimed at me. Diversi-TIES-no barriers to disability in there worthwhile comment explains that a stakeholders meeting is planned to be held at the Riverside Centre Saturday March 13th so if either you “Robbo” or you “paper tiger” are sincere and have something worthwhile to contribute to… Read more »

Will you have anything worthwhile to contribute though Mr Rushton ? From what I have seen in the past you are the arch-exponent of ‘snide’ and not someone the Riverside would benefit from having involved. Maybe you have changed ?

I’m surprised noody has twigged the councils agenda over the Riverside. Make it financialky unviable by charging exhorbitant rent, force closure and then turn it into: a)Nice offices for commercial letting b) Nice offices for council officers,m after they have sold off all other properties and pocketed the cash – see their Capital Receipts Programme. or c)Lovely building plot for upmarket harbourside flats for well heeled DFLs.… Read more »

Thank you but no. I regret to say I have arthritis which sometimes causes me to hit the wrong key. I suppose I should read it before I post but I’m just so incensed by this arrogant bunch of maladminitrators that I forget.

I hope you managed to get the message though.

I have done the same many a time. I know exactly how infuriating these things can be. But it was funny.

Well spotted Victor. A chum who is a “source close to the estates department” told me that they have already been approached by a mainland company with a view to renting it!

What a bunch of no hopers. Their incompetence is incompetent!

Gosh…an anonymus person lambasting anonymity! This isn’t a thread about Rushton, or his well known library of complaints! The Riverside Centre is a jewel in the crown of the island and Richard Priest’s continual public admiration of their work is testement to that. Doubtless, the property is hugely valuable financially and will be the underlying reason for forcing it to close….perhaps another protest is in order? Will… Read more »

Hehe-sorry…can’t help it!

On a serious note, I wonder what the legal status of the charities that are based at the RC is? They obviously pay a rent and have there own lease which will give them some legal protection I assume.

Forgive me, but I am slightly curious about this need to maximise rentals from Council(our)property.
Does anyone know how much the Shanklin band (with DP at its head) pays in rental for the Rylstone Chalet they use for band practise?
Could be worth a lot if sold for expensive flats?

In reply to your query Loose Cannon, I don’t think that they pay any rent other than, possibly, a peppercorn rent (ie a token miniscule amount).
