We’re always happy to share ‘letters to the editor’ with our readers. This letter from Jack Morton highlights the new self-service kiosks in libraries which the council say the total cost of which will be £140,000. If you have something you’d like to say, get in touch. Ed
I went to Ryde library last week where they have installed self-service book checkout.
Apparently, the checkouts cost £140,000, paid for by savings they have made through job cuts in the libary service.
Ironically, one of the jobs these self-service checkouts will allow library staff to do, is help residents with the Job Club.
Is it me or is this all a bit a**e about face!!??
The new checkouts cannot check your borrowing history to let you know if you had a book before.
Also, you need to get a paper receipt which tells you when the book is due back – personally I think a rubber stamp is more cost effective – is this part of the councils drive towards a paperless society?
