This from Laurie Tennant. Ed
You’ve no doubt read about Shetland’s serious attempt to leap forward by the building of road tunnels between islands to replace aging, expensive and inadequate ferries.
The total population of Shetland is about 23,000 – one fifth of the Isle of Wight – and they reckon they can get not one, but four tunnels for £1.5Bn and, yes, that’s about £400M each.
The Faeroe Islands have been doing it for years (total population 56,000 – 40% of ours).
What on earth is stopping us? Surely it can’t be lack of political will?
