Library smart watch scheme encourages Islanders to move more this summer

Islanders can borrow free smart watches from six libraries for six weeks

Following the successful launch of the Isle of Wight Council Public Health team’s Physical Activity Smart Watch Loan Scheme earlier this year, residents are being encouraged to take advantage of the initiative, designed to support movement, wellbeing and healthier habits.

How the scheme works
Since February, members at participating libraries have been able to borrow an Amazfit Bip 6 smart watch completely free of charge, for up to six weeks.

Anyone aged 16 or over who is not already a library member can sign up when they visit, making sure to bring along Photo ID.

Summer a good time to start
With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time for Islanders to build movement into their daily routine.

Whether it’s a short walk along the beach, gardening at home, a gentle evening cycle, every bit of movement supports better physical and mental health.

The smart watch can help residents set achievable goals and enjoy simple, everyday activity. Even small changes make a meaningful difference.

‘Key to reducing inequalities’
Kate Harvey, Director of Public Health said,

“We’re delighted to see how well the scheme has been received so far. Supporting residents to move more is key to improving health and reducing inequalities across the Island.

“The warmer months are a wonderful opportunity for more people to take advantage of this free scheme, enjoy our beautiful surroundings and feel the physical, mental and social benefits of being active.”

What the watches do
The watches are lightweight, waterproof and easy to use, with features including step counting, sleep tracking, activity monitoring and wellbeing insights, helping users stay motivated at a pace that works for them.

Where to borrow one
The libraries involved in this scheme are:

  1. Lord Louis Library, Newport
  2. Cowes Library
  3. Ventnor Library
  4. Sandown Library
  5. Ryde Library
  6. Freshwater Library

Councillor to sign up in Ryde
Councillor Michael Lilley, vice-chair of the council’s adult social care, Public Health and housing needs committee and Mental Health Champion, said,

“This is great news and I do encourage and recommend Island residents to take this offer up.

“We all need to keep fit as we know if you are physical fit and active you’re mental well-being improves. I am coming into my 70th year shortly and live by the philosophy a healthy body leads to a healthy mind.

“I will be popping into Ryde Library to take advantage of the smart watch programme and promote it to Ryde residents. I encourage others to do the same.”
