News reaches us that a ballot was taken on Friday last week for strike action against the proposed closure of nine of the eleven libraries on the Isle of Wight.
We’re told that library staff who are Unison members across the Island will take the strike action on Wednesday 23rd February.
This is the same day that the full council will vote to reject or approve proposals for major public service cuts on the Island.
Mark Chiverton, branch rep for Unison told VB, “This is a stand that library staff feel compelled to make in defence of the service that they’ve always been proud to serve in.”
There will be picket lines outside every library on the Island and Unison members invite campaigners to join them between 10am-12pm with the exception of Ventnor which will be 2pm-3.30pm.

In addition a mass rally is planned for this coming Saturday, 19th February from Newport Quay At 11am marching through Newport to St Thomas’ Square where speakers will address the public.
