UKSA in Cowes is offering seven young people the chance of a lifetime to train for a career in the maritime industry, thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme. Each trainee will take part in UKSA’s Go Beyond programme, with the generous funding covering the cost of careers advice, training courses, safety equipment, accommodation and catering.
The 10 week course is delivered by UKSA’s professional instructors and will provide the young people with valuable maritime qualifications for use in their future careers.
Everyone taking part has in the past experienced challenging circumstances that make finding educational, training or employment opportunities difficult.
Jon Ely, Chief Executive at UKSA, commented: “This is a really exciting project that has the potential to really make a difference. We are delighted to have been selected by the Big Lottery Fund to assist in changing these young people’s lives, and in turn to help them help others, with part of the course encouraging our trainees to volunteer in their local communities or support disabled and disadvantaged children at UKSA. We look forward to welcoming them soon.”
Available for seven young people
The Go Beyond programme will train 15 young people overall in partnership with Prince’s Trust, who have been responsible for selecting the trainees and are covering the rest of the course costs.
The Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme is responsible for giving out half the money raised for good causes by the National Lottery and aims to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need.
Grants ranging from £300 to £10,000 are available to fund a specific project or activity.
