Kathy Williams uv painting Place of Safety

Listen to Kathy Williams’ audio tour of ‘Place of Safety’ before it closes

There are just two days left to see Isle of Wight artist, Kathy Williams’ latest installation – Place of Safety – at La Falaise shelter on Ventnor’s western cliffs.

If you haven’t (or even if you have) been up to see the installation, we thought it would be interesting for everyone to have the benefit of having the artist walk around the installation with you, so recorded a conversation we had with Kathy earlier in the week.

Painting as a Democratic Act
This Arts Council England funded project is part of ongoing research ideas being explored by Kathy about Painting as a Democratic Act (PaDA).

Kathy continually seeks to push the boundaries of how we think of using paint as a relevant, expressive medium, as well as thinking how the public has access to, engages with and understands contemporary artwork that uses paint.

This installation was created as the outcome of a series of workshops with local residents held at Peer Street Studios, Better Days Cafe and The Green Room (Salisbury Gardens).

Incredibly photogenic
Become your own artist by shooting photos of the installation for your Instagram feed. The installation allows you to create great content, especially when viewed at night – this is when the UV paint that has been used comes into its own.

Check out Kathy’s Instagram feed to see some of the images shared with her of the installation.

It was quite a windy night, so some parts of the recording have a bit of background noise.
