Isle of Wight Council has supported members of local girlguiding and scouting groups to achieve merit badges by helping them plant flowers and shrubs on Ryde seafront and Seaclose Park in Newport.
As part of an annual scheme, IW Council officers and workers from John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance and Groundsell Landscaping helped the young people with the planting.
The first event was held on Ryde Esplanade where members of the 8th Ryde Brownies chose a design and planted flower beds and shrubs in planters near to the pier entrance.
The activity helped them towards achieving their environment and community involvement merit badges.
The following day, Newport based 6th Beavers and Cubs took part in a tree planting regeneration scheme at Seaclose Park in Newport. They planted native trees and shrubs to improve the wildlife habitat and regenerate the tree stock in the arboretum and surrounding area.
This also helped them to achieve merit badges in horticulture, the environment and community involvement. Help was once again provided by John O’Conner. The work was carried out to coincide with this week’s Isle of Wight Festival.
IW Council’s parks, countryside and beaches department is keen to encourage youngsters learn about the importance of planting in the environment, and the important role it plays in the future years to come.
