More than 25 people gathered outside Stenbury Hall in Wroxall this morning after the community hall’s cafe was told its rental agreement had been terminated with immediate effect.
The View Cafe, which has operated at the hall for around 16 months, ran a breakfast club used by children from the village’s primary school.
Aviv Goode, who runs The View Cafe, said she was informed of the termination by email at 5pm yesterday (Thursday 10th September 2026). She said the locks were changed overnight, between her closing at 4pm and arriving to open at 8am, and that she was not told this would happen.
She said she is currently unable to access the premises to retrieve her till, equipment, card reader and personal belongings, and is arranging storage at short notice.
Ms Goode said the lease requires WCA to give her six months’ notice. She said she had received no prior written warning, complaint or breach notice, and that a meeting with the charity in July had been positive.
What the charity says
Wroxall Community Association (WCA), the registered charity that runs Stenbury Hall, announced the termination in a statement issued on 10th September 2026.
It said that “several relationships have been severely compromised during the last month to a point that is considered beyond repair” and that the charity had therefore ended the agreement with immediate effect.
The WCA statement issued on Thursday added,
“It is with deep regret that the cafe will be lost from our village; we appreciate that their customers valued the provision.”
It said that providing a business with space to rent was not a primary focus of the charity, and had cost the charity funds and volunteers’ time.
Breakfast club
The breakfast club run at the cafe is free to any child.
It was started organically during the road closure, and is funded by Aviv Goode personally, with donations from Wroxall Woollies and originally Wroxall Foodbank.
Parents helped to set up and tidy, and around ten children who were expecting breakfast this morning went without.
Questions to WCA
OnTheWight has put questions to the WCA about the termination, the changing of the locks and the future of the breakfast club.
We will update this article when we receive a response.
