Making Your ‘Mind’ Up At Riverside Centre

Thanks to Richard for this update, in his own words.

The Isle of Wight branch of MIND, are celebrating the Mental Health Awareness Week (21st-27th May) by recognising the contribution made by Island individuals and organisations with an ‘Excellence in Mental Health’ event, with guests Island MP Andrew Turner and Chair of WightMind George Baty, from Noon, on Friday 25th May 2012 at the Riverside Centre, Newport.

Highlighting contributions made
The local branch has responded to concerns being expressed regarding proposed funding cuts to local mental health care and support provision, by working with statutory and voluntary sector agencies to develop services, and arrange an event to highlight the contribution made by individuals and groups involved with Mental Health on the Island.

Event Organiser Paddy Noctor said, “The event will provide an opportunity for service users to find out more about the services that are provided locally, and celebrate the positive successes that have been achieved.”

Special figurines commissioned
IW MIND, together with South Wight Housing Association, have commissioned special figurines to recognise the contribution made by individuals and organisations involved in the recovery model of mental health provision: awards include, Employment, Carers, Education, Youth and Volunteers, as well as two Special Awards.

Wightmind Chair George Baty added, “WightMIND has an important part to play in the development and provision of services on the Island, for example working with the Riverside to provide healthy lifestyle facilities in Quay House, providing training and self help courses, and developing a supporting people project in 2012.”

Expanding the issue somewhat – I turned 51 last week – When I think back, people of my generation have probably experienced the most incredible changes in communications of any past generation. Those of us of a similar age grew up when their was only three channels, mobile phones were just a theoretical possibility and as for the internet! and of course, I could go on.

So true. Even in the last decade or two.

I wonder how many people miss watching snooker on a black and white TV?

Re: Snooker. I have a vague memory of seeing a clip on one of those ‘cock-ups’ on TV type shows, where a Snooker commentator (In the very early days of colour, when most people still had BW) “and for those watching in black and white, the blue is right next to the pink!”

So so true…I find much of it hard to get my head around and its even more tricky for the elderly, and if we are honest much of it is superfluous to our needs…especially shopping channels aaaargh! Am same generation as you (53 this year) and I hope reasonably enlightened but can’t get my head around music downloads and stuff, much rather have vinyl or CD something… Read more »

I’m 65 and remember when our house was the only one in the road to have TV! The choice was either BBC or OFF! Most of the (viewing) time now, I think nothing has changed.

I’m surprised how impressed I’ve been with it. Obviously there are channels on there I just skip past, but those HD channels are most welcome.

I agree. For the most part, I have embraced all the technology we have now, HDTV included. I still have a hatred of mobile phones though, even tough I have one! which I only ever use to text my partner. Typing this on my brand new laptop and wireless keyboard! and when I can afford it, it’s a Kindle e-reader next!

Radio 4’s ‘Today’ programme had a small piece on this change over.

One interesting/worrying fact was that relay stations themselves may not be fully switched over before 15.00 today. Therefore attempting a re-tune on sets receiving from a relay transmitter early may be time wasted.

ITV 3 disappeared from my TV this morning. Not sure it’s worth trying to get that back.

I can do better than that, Lars. In the dear, dead days of analogue TV, I could receive all Freeview channels. I re-tuned – as per various intsructions – to the new wonders of digital goggle box on, er… 7 March, 14 March, 21 March and now 18 April. Now I get half the Freeview channels I used to get with steam telly. But as most of… Read more »

Well, My telly needed what they call a “factory reset” as it kept either missing channels or “forgetting” the re-tune when switched off. However, it didn’t need to go to the factory for that, just pressing some buttons. After that it was fine.

I liked “male bovine ordeure” too, though I might just have said horse-shit for boys myself. Maybe I’m losing it a bit, but wasn’t it supposed to be the case that we would only gain channels? I see that I too have “lost” Channel 11 – and more, for all I know or care.

Surely bovine relates to cattle? Equine is for horses.

Well I had about 15-20 channels for about 3 weeks, amazing quality, but then zero, nothing, they have vanished! I have re-tuned numerous times but still a blank TV
Bring back analogue or even black & white – anything really….
