Pile of face masks

Mandatory face masks return to University Hospital Southampton to protect against high levels of viruses

All adult clinical areas at University Hospital Southampton are subject to the re-introduction of mandatory face masks.

The hospital say the restrictions have been put in place to help “prevent further spread and protect patients and staff”.

Current high levels of viruses
The hospital say the measures are “a necessary response to the current high levels of viruses that are causing increased pressure on our bed availability at a time when we are seeing sustained pressure coming through our Emergency Department”.

As well as the re-introduction of mandatory face masks, visitor access has been restricted, meaning there will be no visiting permitted.

Exemptions
Southampton Children’s Hospital and maternity service areas will be exempt from the mask and visitor restrictions.

There will also be exemptions for patients on end-of-life pathways/exceptional circumstances and carers of patients. Families will be asked to speak to their clinical teams if they fall under these exemptions to make appropriate arrangements.
