It was a very successful day for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at the Southampton Coalporters Regatta, on the River Itchen, Southampton, on Saturday (14th August, 2021) with wins for the Men’s Senior Four and Pair and good performances from the other Club crews – although a number of crews had to scratch due to Covid-19 complications.
The Men’s Senior Four of Alex Miller, Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing and Tom Hammond and coxed by Jo Gabber, although slightly behind their old rivals from BTC at the third turning mark in the final – which is raced twice around the course, involving three racing turns – rowed through BTC on the final leg to take the win, which all but guarantees selection as a Hants and Dorset ARA Championship representative crew in this event at September’s South Coast Championship Regatta.
Men’s Senior Pairs
Matt Allsopp and Mike Ewing also won the Men’s Senior Pairs Final giving them a third point in this Hants and Dorset ARA Championship and which they now lead.
Ladies Senior Four
There was a strong performance from the Club’s Ladies Senior Four, racing for only the second time this season where the crew of Ayesha Russell, Lisa Murphy, Catherine Oatley and Emily Faithfull – coxed by Mick Jenner finishing second in their heat failing by just six seconds to gain a place in the final.
Mike Jenner then raced in a composite crew with Coalporters in the Men’s Masters Coxed fours finishing in second place.
Men’s Novice Crews
The Ryde Men’s Novice A Crew of Harry Jones, Frankie Leftley, Callum Hynd and Paddy Kearney coxed by Camon Adams easily won their heat to reach the semi-final but failed to reach the final.
The Novice B Crew of Tom Kerver, Gulley Roughen, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan and coxed once again by Camon Adams finished second in their heat after a spirited row.
