Met Office warning for overnight thunderstorms and possible flooding

It’s not the news many wanted to hear for the Jubilee weekend, but the Met Office are forecasting thunderstorms overnight for much of the South of the UK, including the Isle of Wight.

The weather warning is valid from Midnight tonight until 10am Saturday and reads:

While many places will stay dry, thunderstorms will bring heavy rain and lightning to some places early on Saturday.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

Further information
There is the possibility of thunderstorms moving north into southern counties of England during the early hours of Saturday, these then easing later in the morning.

Many places will miss the worst of them, but where they do occur frequent lightning and heavy rain is possible.

A few places could see 20-30 mm of rain within an hour, with a small chance of 50 mm in 2-3 hours, most likely near the south coast.
