Military Road / Chine Road Junction Flooded (Photo gallery)

As we mentioned earlier on Twitter, the Military Road in Atherfield by Chine Lane was flooded earlier today.

Military Road / Chine Road Function Flooded (Photo gallery)An Isle of Wight Fire Brigade appliance was luckily able to attend and pump away the excess water.

We also heard that other parts of the Island were affected by flooding – Shell Bell told us of flooding in the Havenstreet area.

Flooding all week
This week has the flooding of roads around much of the south of the Island, often to the point of the roads becoming impassable.

As to why the roads have been affected like this this year is currently not understood.

Theres always flooding on island roads, every year. This just seems more than usual.
Maybe the drainage should be looked at. or maybe its just that the drainage has been overwhelmed by the weight of water. There has been a lot of rain recently.

Someone may want to ask why Highway Maintenance were recently gritting with builders sand which is not water dispersible and therefore blocks drains.

I’ll leave it to someone else on this occasion. I have other fish to fry. Perhaps you might want to ask them yourself. Their details should be on the council website. Let us know what they say.

ahhh typical. theres many people who can talk about things, but few that can actually research them properly.

I suspect your wrong in any case, i dont beleive builders sand was used. For one, it costs more than proper road grit.

Sharp Sand, not Builders Sand IIRC

A little overly combative Anon. I have regularly taken up issues that arise here and am currently chasing a fairly big one. Steven B is correct, it was sharps.

Probably tell you they have £1M communications

but not a £5K of salt

well clearly they have plenty of salt. I dont think they would bother to lie about something like that. If they got caught out there would be hell to pay. Also, if it was found out they used builders sand instead of proper salt.

So big ears, if you can prove they used builders sand, please do so. If your too busy frying fish, then go away.

“If your too busy frying fish, then go away” !!!!!

I’ve held off from saying it before now, but your obsessive posting is getting tiresome. Perhaps you should listen to your own advice.

That is the point. Despite earlier assurances, it transpires that the council doesn’t have sufficient salt and have actually taken major thoroughfares off the gritting rota until gritting material can be sourced. I know this because I HAVE taken the trouble to chase up this matter.

Oh youve chased it up now? well done. Wheres the proof then?
And Trevor, i did think this was free for anyone to post to. If you dont like what i have to say feel free to ignore me.

Annonymous – I detect an offensive belligerence in your attitude which either hides an agenda or you are a very miserable person indeed.

no not at all. Youve made a statement. If you wish others to beleive it, you should back it up with some evidence. Im sure your trustworthy, but then again i dont know you. Put your money where your mouth is. Anyone can make unfounded allegations. It takes more to prove it. Make the phone call and ask them. Its you that suggested someone asking highways maintenance… Read more »

I havnt picked an argument at all. Ive simply asked big ears to support what hes said with evidence, and he hasnt done so. Instead hes asked me to try and support his argument. I also find it odd that almost every story on here starts with comments about the story and then just degenerates into council bashing. Its about time some people aknowlaged that whilst theres… Read more »

Fair point. I withdraw that comment.

As for your point about the council bashing comment, i would have to say, not some, but most comments. and also, most stories, if not against the council, then against whoever the story concerns. Again, thats fair enough, but it would be nice to see more positive comments on here

@annonymous – to suggest that most of our stories are bashing whoever they are written about just shows how little you’ve read of VB. With 7,745 articles published in four and a half years, it is likely there will be some that are critical of whatever/whoever it is that we are discussing, but to say that most follow that pattern is completely untrue and to my eyes,… Read more »

I was pointing out that most comments on most stories appear to be negative. Referring to the comments, not the stories. The stories themselves are often very good and simply report the facts to allow us to make up our own minds. however, occasionally i do find myself thinking that the authors opinion is reflected quite prominately. Thankfully thats not often the case.

If it wasn’t for VB the people wouldn’t have had their say on Pughgate and it would have just been brushed under the carpet with the usual Wightwash

VB cannot be expected to delete comments merely because the vast majority are critical of the council, they are just supplying a platform for people to express their views whatever they might be.

@annonymous If you were referring to the comments not the stories, I don’t quite understand why you would use the words “and also, most stories,”

That aside, your retraction and apology is accepted.

perhaps i should have included the word on. Most comments on most stories. thats what i meant. i just phrased it wrong clearly. youpughbe, i havnt ever suggested VB delete posts. Just that maybe a fairer balance would be nice. but thats up to the commenters not VB. It might be nice to have an edit feature so you can edit posts after you post them tho.… Read more »

The Council have been using sand to grit Cowes High Street.Just ask a shop keeper or publican with carpets. It was dark and rich in colour, not like beach sand. This was on the pavements and pedestrian areas like Shooters Hill and Watch House Lane.

There is, of course, a lot of Council bashing on here because the buck generally stops with them and they are to be accountable. However, I think it is regrettable that we live in a blame culture and that everything has to be someone’s fault. We’ve had more snow than we’ve had in years and more grit was needed than anyone expected- this story has repeated all… Read more »

may i also add to this that there is flooding all over the country, and i dont think grit has anything to do with it. Simply weather conditions.

For anyone interested (although this thread seems to have gone astray from the original title) the reason the floods were so bad here is because the large ditch between the field and the road was full to the brim with water before the rain started. The soil here is clay & the drains couldn’t cope with the amount of water running off the fields.By mid afternoon it… Read more »
