Richard Quigley, Labour MP for Isle of Wight West, has written to retailers across the constituency, urging them to voluntarily suspend the sale of disposable barbecues and sky lanterns following the devastating fire at Headon Warren last month.
Quigley: A significant fire risk
Writing to small, medium and large retailers who stock Isle of Wight West Wight, Richard Quigley emphasised,
“Disposable barbecues and sky lanterns can pose a significant fire risk in hot, dry conditions, particularly in an area such as the Isle of Wight, where we are proud of our internationally recognised natural environment and unique landscapes.
“I recognise that many businesses have already taken responsible steps to raise awareness of fire risks, and I am grateful for those efforts. A temporary voluntary suspension of sales during this high-risk period would demonstrate further leadership and a shared commitment to protecting our Island.”
Advice while drought conditions remain
The call follows advice issued by the Isle of Wight Council and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which published the following guidance after the fire and continues to urge the public to follow it while drought conditions remain in place:
- Never light disposable or portable barbecues in the countryside.
- Never light campfires or open fires.
- Dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials safely.
- Take all litter home with you, especially glass bottles, which can increase the risk of fire.
- Follow local advice, signage and any temporary access restrictions.
- Keep dogs under close control around livestock and wildlife.
- If you spot a fire, move to safety immediately and call 999. Never attempt to tackle a wildfire yourself.
Tesco clears shelves
Richard has already received positive responses including from Tesco, who confirmed that it has temporarily removed disposable barbecues from its shelves in response to the current drought conditions.
Quigley: We all have a responsibility
Richard said,
“I know that barbecues and sky lanterns are a much-loved part of summer for many people across the Island. This isn’t about stopping people from enjoying themselves, but about recognising that we all have a responsibility to help protect our renowned natural environment for future generations.
“The Council and the Fire and Rescue Service have been very clear in their advice, and I fully support their efforts. The best way to thank and support the heroic firefighters who responded to last month’s fire is to follow their guidance and do everything we can to reduce the risk of further incidents.”
