MP to complain about temporary loss of Cowes Post Office

In a letter to the Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, this week Post Office Limited have stated that the current facility in Marks and Spencer’s car park will be closing on 12th November and that the new facility which will be sited in Cowes Yacht Haven, will be opening on 1st December.

Mr Turner said:

“It is just not acceptable for Cowes residents to be denied Post Office services for three weeks, particularly at what is, arguably, one of the busiest times of the year with Christmas approaching.

“I have today written to both Marks and Spencer and the Post Office pointing out that the alternatives they have offered, that is either Newport or East Cowes Post Offices, are just not a viable solution. I have asked them both to look at ways of preventing any disruption to the Post Office service in Cowes during the re-location and I hope they will come back to me with a satisfactory solution.”

When the old Southern Co-op site in Terminus Road was taken over by Marks & Spencer it was made clear that the Post Office would not be incorporated into their plans and a new site would have to be found. They did, however, agree to allow the Post Office to remain on the site for approximately four months to allow another location to be sourced. Marks & Spencer now want to return the car park to its usual use but if no extension can be agreed with the Post Office, Cowes residents face having at least a five mile round trip to access Post Office services.
