MP Votes In Favour Of EU Referendum

This in from Andrew Turner’s office in their own words. Ed

Andrew Turner was among 26 MPs who voted in favour of a referendum on Britain’s continued membership of the European Union.

The proposed amendment to the EU Bill, currently going through the House of Commons, was opposed by 295 MPs and was therefore defeated.

British people should have a say
However the Island’s MP says that although he recognised there were valid technical concerns about how this amendment would trigger a referendum, he wanted to make a stand and register his support for the British people having a say on our relationship with the EU.

During the debate Mr Turner told the House of Commons he had met Islanders who had turned to the Liberal Party because they felt so disillusioned with a Conservative government who took Britain into Europe and who even now, vote Liberal Democrat.

UK has to enforce EU diktats
Mr Turner said, “The British people have not had a chance to give their opinion on our relationship with what is now the EU since 1975. There was a referendum then on whether Britain should continue its membership of the Common Market. I voted ‘No’, but even those who voted ‘Yes’ did not know, and were certainly not told, the eventual effects of staying in. For instance we are now in the position that we cannot prevent unlimited immigration from 26 other countries; and we have to enforce ridiculous diktats and quota systems leading to half the fish caught in the North Sea being dumped back into the ocean, dead, simply because they are not the right species.”

He went on to say, “I do not pretend that the Conservative Party has got everything right on Europe in the past. That is all the more reason why we should now let the public decide how they should be governed. The Liberal Democrats have insisted that in May we must hold a referendum on what voting system we use; but people believe that all the mainstream parties promised them a referendum on the EU – I believe we should give them that. Even though I was elected as a Conservative MP, when I believe the Party is headed in the wrong direction I have a duty to vote according to my conscience.

How about an island Referendum on either two MPs or one MP for the IoW. Come on Andrew show some courage.

Not necessary

Andrew Turner has already said he would support a referendum on that issue. It was David Pugh that said it would be a waste of money.

Well done Andrew, enough is enough, those of us under 50 never had a vote, lets sort this out, a trading alliance is all we need, not laws made by others

The ,last Conservative MP who I remember standing up against his party for his beliefs was Enoch Powell, a gentleman I met on several occasions. If you continue to follow his example Mr Turner you will be an example to others. Thanks

I’m in favour of a referendum…and hope that the real story, other than the urban legends and blatant lies, that are told about the ‘Common Market’ are exposed and the British public sensibly vote to remain in the only trading block able to compete with the US and Asia.

Yes it needs an overhaul….but lets no through the baby out with the bathwater

They took no notice of Powell and look at the state of the UK now. We can not get out of Europe we signed on the dotted line. Get rid of the unelected ‘House of Lords’ and let all the members of the ‘House of Windsor’ pay for their own protection – Holidays, nightclubs etceteras, these protection officers enjoy the life of Riley. Is it any wonder… Read more »

We had a referendum in 1972 I believe and the vote was for joining. The question now is how much union do we want, not do we want a union.

Of course if this referendum says stay in, within six months the dounbters will be calling for another referendum.

If we were fully committed to the EEC we could have had some influence in the direction it took, but our piecemeal participation has left us out in the cold.

Vote for reform, not exit

Am I missing something here? According to the report the ammendment was defeated 295 to 26. Thats a total of 321, correct? We elect 650 M.P.s do we not? So this ammendment was defeated by less than half of the total members! I notice that similar figures applied to the viote on giving prisoners the vote. With the last election result it would seem that democracy UK… Read more »

People who complain ceaselessly about how membership of the Common Market through to the European Union has ‘robbed’ us of our precious sovereignty seem to overlook the fact we’d be nowhere by now trying to go it alone. As it is our non-membership of the Euro illustrates both our lack of internal democracy [re. Andrew Turner’s gesture referendum idea] and our utter failure to operate strategically and… Read more »

“…our non-membership of the Euro illustrates both our lack of internal democracy… and our utter failure to operate strategically and decisively” Or, alternatively, thank God we’re not in it, considering the state of the Euro and the mess a number of countries in the Euro Zone are in (Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Greece etc). “…overlook the fact we’d be nowhere by now trying to go it alone” Since… Read more »

Well done Andrew, you are saying what the majority of British people are thinking. We joined a ‘Common Market’ – a trading organisation. We have since been duped and lied to by succesive governments and forced into a massive non-democratic neo-communist state, that costs us a fortune.

Are my eyes deceiving me or did I actually read this comment in MP Andrew Turner’s latest press release?

That’s right, he seems to think that he has only to hitch a ride into Westminster with that ‘Conservative’ party label and then can be an ‘independent’ the next day. Point 1) We elect MPs as ‘individuals’ – so they can criss-cross party allegiance like swingers. On the other hand Point 2) We are expected ‘choose’ our MP and cast our votes on the basis of their… Read more »

The comments above confirm my suspicion that this Island is largely populated by right-wing Europhobes… and referencing Enoch Powell doesn’t help the case (anyone ACTUALLY remember the “rivers of blood” rant?) – I’m beginning to suspect that the Europhobia is actually just thinly disguised xenophobia… let’s not forget that our own hospital has many foreign health workers we couldn’t do without, and not-to-mention the invaluable support Poland… Read more »

heres the actual speech “As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding. Like the Roman, I seem to see ‘the River Tiber foaming with much blood’. Winston Churchhill said he took more out of alcohol than alcohol took out of him and I think it is the same with the UK and the European Union.
Life is better with it for us all,but I agree we need to opt out of some parts including staying out of the flawed Euro!

Andrew Turner doesn’t represent me on this issue, either. Europhobia makes some people feel good because they’ve got something else to whinge about. The real scandals are the sell-offs and loss of national control over our crucial industries and utilities. That has nothing to do with the EU but stems from ideology of both parties, starting with Thatcher. The French are remarkably adept at keeping their own… Read more »

Last night I went to the Apollo theatre in Newport to see “Kindertransport”. It’s a play about one Jewish girl out of the 10,000 Jewish children from across Europe who were given refuge in this country in the months of 1939 leading to the war. Many of those stayed behind after the war, married and raised families, and are now indistinguishable from what we like to think… Read more »
