Catching Prawns Can Be Terrifying

Most of us have no accurate idea of what happens to the food before it appears on our plates.

This week we were amazed to see a photo by Mike Curtis, who goes under the Twitter name of BembridgeFish and catches the fish that his Wife (Ruth) sells at The Captain Stan Fish Store in Bembridge.

Scary conditions
It shows a 18m prawn boat off the coast of North Western Scotland catching langoustines, taken last winter.

We spent a very long time looking at the picture trying to get our heads around what was going on in the picture and then attempting to get a grasp on quite what it would be like to be on a boat in those conditions. Beyond terrifying was the conclusion we came to.

Mike followed this up with another photo of the same boat in ‘calmer’ conditions, which frankly would scare us stiff too.

So next time you’re lucky enough to sit down for some langoustines, a pint of prawns, or have some in a dish, spare a thought for where they might have come from and what might have gone on for them to be caught.
