During a routine water quality test in the waters of Cowes beach on 9 August by the Environment Agency, the quality of the water fell below the minimum standards required by the EU.
Investigations underway
Although the reasons for the abnormal reading are not yet known, both Southern Water and the Environment Agency – who are the organisations responsible for the water quality – are carrying out investigations.
Cowes Beach itself is not affected and members of the public are able to continue using it as normal unless otherwise advised.
Quality Coast Award Flag removed
As a precaution, the Quality Coast Award Flag has have been removed pending the outcome of the investigation.
If further tests prove to be acceptable then the flag will be restored.
