After the successful exhibition last summer of pictures reproduced from the National Gallery on the Life of Mary, the Mother of Christ, Quarr Abbey hosted a second summer exhibition.
A second summer of masterpieces
These were pictures, again from the National Gallery, covering the events of Holy Week as it is known, the time leading up to the death of Christ on the Cross and his Resurrection. The pictures were from 14th to 17th century, and featured such great artists as El Greco, Tintoretto and Caravaggio.
Poetry in the picture gallery”
It was held in the new gallery in the courtyard inaugurated last year. Island poet Edmund Matyjaszek, whose latest poetry collection “A Book of Feasts: The Marian Year” has a foreword by Abbot Xavier of Quarr, had a residency every Tuesday where he explained the paintings and read poems on the pictures.
A stream of visitors, Islanders, Mainlanders, even some from abroad – Sweden, America – attended.
Next stop: Oxford
In the spring Edmund will be taking the Life of Mary exhibition to Oxford University where it will hang for the month of May.
