Neglect of the Elderly in NHS Hospitals

This in from Andrew Turner’s office, in their own words. Ed

‘Care and Compassion?’, published by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman in February, is a damning report into institutionalised neglect of elderly people by NHS staff.

There is no suggestion in the report that there are any concerns about St Mary’s or any private providers of elderly care on the Island, but Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP believes that information contained in the report may be used by the local NHS Trust to ensure that there are no problems in the future.

Report does not accurately portray all health professionals
Mr Turner said, “Having benefited from the care and compassion of local health staff following a stroke in 2006 I know full well that the report does not accurately portray all health professionals.

“There may be no serious issues on the Island but we cannot be complacent and I do want to find out whether there are lessons that can be learned from this report, for both the NHS and private care homes.”

If you have experienced a less than satisfactory level of healthcare, Mr Turner said, “It is important that you always give your hospital the opportunity to investigate your concerns. But, if you have already tried this, or feel that you cannot go directly to the Trust, please contact my office and I will raise any concerns on your behalf.”
