ISLE of Wight Council has voted in a new council chairman.
Councillor Arthur Taylor took over the top civic job from outgoing chairman Councillor Roger Mazillius at full council’s annual meeting held on Wednesday (April 16).
Lady Pigot became deputy chairman of the authority – taking over the role from Cllr Taylor.
Councillor Albert Arthur Taylor (known as Arthur), 79, was born in Catterick in Yorkshire but has lived on the Island since he was one.
He served ten years in the Merchant Navy, latterly as a radio officer.
On leaving the Merchant Navy, he became a TV and electrical store manager retiring in 1982 and was elected as a councillor for Ryde North West on May 7 1987, serving on the last eight years of Medina Borough Council.
He was elected to Isle of Wight Council in 1996 and served on a number of committees including chairman of planning and licensing.
He said: “I am honoured to become chairman and I would like to assure everyone I will carry out my duties with dignity and diligence.
“When I was elected to Medina Borough Council 21 years ago, I never imagined I would be in this position. It is a challenge I am very much looking forward to.”
