A new exhibition at Dimbola Lodge got off to a great start last month with a very special guest attending the launch party.
Families, artists and supporters of the No Man Is An Island project were welcomed to the exhibition along with Cat Lorigggio from London2012, who travelled down from London especially for the occasion.
‘The Camera & Beyond’ the latest exhibition from the No Man is an Island group.
It is part of a project in which Island artists are collaborating with a group of young people, whose photographs they have interpreted in other media for this exhibition. The work includes painting, poetry, textiles, printmaking and sculpture.
Award winning poet Luke Kennard composed poetry especially for the exhibition, inspired by the photographs, which he read at the open evening.
The exhibition organiser, artist Melanie Swan, said “this is a fantastic joint effort and everyone worked really hard even when times got difficult. We’re really grateful to Dimbola for their support and we hope people will take advantage of the fantastic opportunity to visit Dimbola Lodge free of charge during February. Please come and see what we’re doing in our Project and don’t forget to write in the comments book!”
No Man is an Island
No Man is an Island is working to provide creative opportunities to families living with autism. They were awarded funding by Awards for All last year to produce community workshops and exhibitions and the work they produced will form the core of an exhibition they hope to show in London in 2012. Their work was recognised last year by London2012, through the Inspire mark, and are included as part of the national Cultural Olympiad.
Following her visit to the exhibition at Dimbola, Cat Loriggio wrote “I am very proud to have ‘No Man is an Island’ as part of the Cultural Olympiad in the south east. The group are really living up to the Olympian ideal of pushing beyond their personal bests producing some excellent art work as well as very valuable social outcomes. The young people and the professional artists involved in the project continue to impress me with their talents, energy and determination and we’ll do whatever we can to get them to London for 2012.” (Caterina Loriggio, Creative Programmer for London 2012 South East)
The Camera & Beyond exhibition is showing at Dimbola Lodge until 28th February, opening times Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm
