Following the first round of voting in the Conservative leadership race, the candidate backed by the Isle of Wight MP would “easily beat all other candidates in final ballot of members” a YouGov poll suggests. See update below.
If you follow Isle of Wight Conservative MP Bob Seely on social media, you’ll have seen on Monday afternoon that he threw his support behind Portsmouth North MP, Penny Mordaunt, in the Conservative Leadership race.

First round of voting
Mordaunt came in second place in the first round of voting, which saw Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi knocked out of the race. The remaining candidates had the following votes.
- Rishi Sunak – 88 votes
- Penny Mordaunt – 67 votes
- Liz Truss – 50 votes
- Kemi Badenoch – 40 votes
- Tom Tugendhat – 37 votes
- Suella Braverman – 32 votes
More about Mordaunt
Penny Mordaunt has been the Conservative MP for Portsmouth North since 2010 and has been serving as Minister of State for Trade Policy since 2021.
Under Theresa May’s government, Mordaunt was appointed Secretary of State for Defence, becoming the first woman to hold the post. She was removed from the position by Boris Johnson.
She is also a Royal Naval Reservist and was made an honorary commander in April 2019, and an honorary captain on 30 June 2021.
