I used to work in a building that used to have something to do with the old railways. It is situated behind the Bargemans Rest. Inside is a still-working winch device. Very heavy duty. Heritage railways are big crowd pullers all over the country. Its a great pity that someone in local Island govenment didn’t have the foresight 40 years ago and saved more of the network. Just think of how things would be now had the line between kept between Shanklin and Ventnor! What now takes nearly an hour by bus could have been at least 15 minutes quicker… and… Read more »

The cuts were to save money in the short term, but have had long term disadvantages.

Doesn’t bode well for what’s happening with the Tourist Information Centres, toilets, libraries, beaches etc does it really…?!

Re Pushy’s comment about the old building behind the Bargeman’s Rest, I think this site was the one that was the subject of a planning application P/01088/10, advertised on 20 Aug 2010. They proposed to tart up the facade of the existing building and to build 14 townhouses behind it. Great day out, brought back so many memories, managed to stay on the old track all the way, got a little muddy and had do a little climbing, also had to push back lots of branches but worth it, wish we still had the trains such a better way to travel.
