In February 2024, the Trustees of Brading Roman Villa Trust launched a public search for new Trustees seeking specific skill sets to enhance the broad range of expertise on the Board of the Trust.
After an extensive public process following the standards set by the Charity Commission for Accredited Museums, the Trustees are pleased to announce today the appointment of eight new Trustees.
The new Trustees are:
- Stephen Bailey, a recently retired lawyer and insurance specialist, island resident and keen Solent sailor. He is looking forward to using his fundraising experience to support the museum.
- Dr Angela Buckley, an historian and author with a particular interest in giving talks on historical subjects to non-specialists. She enjoys researching the Isle of Wight’s rich history and is actively involved in the Isle of Wight Literary Festival.
- Kate Collins DL, a Brading Roman Villa volunteer who has worked with several island organisations, including the Isle of Wight Sports Foundation, the RYS Foundation and the Mountbatten Hospice, of which she is proposed to become a Trustee in July. She is also on the panel for King’s Awards for the Voluntary Sector.
- Martyn Davies, initially trained as an accountant and, after a varied career, was latterly the Bursar at Ryde School. Since retirement, he has undertaken a number of non-executive roles and voluntary charity work. A former Trustee of Brading Haven Yacht Club, he is active in training young sailors.
- Jessica Garbett, a Chartered Accountant and owner of a yoga practice in Brading, with experience as a Governor of the IOW College and various other third-sector organisations locally. Outside of work, she is a volunteer in train operations at IW Steam Railway and a keen sailor.
- Nigel Hartley MBE, the CEO of Mountbatten Hospice Group with 35 years of experience working in the charity sector. He brings a wealth of knowledge of the island and the charity sector.
- Sarah-Jane Kitching, a former GP who now works as a tour guide with a passion for history and heritage sites. She has valuable experience with volunteers and education.
- Dr Louise Revell, an archaeologist and Associate Professor of Roman Studies at the University of Southampton, specialising in the impact of Roman rule on the peoples of the western provinces. She has a long-standing interest in Roman Britain. She was a co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Roman Britain and is currently working on a new book on Roman Britain.
The Chairman, Stewart White, said,
“We are delighted to welcome these new trustees as they bring a wide range of skills and experience to complement and refresh those of our Board and will play a key role in the continuing development of the Villa.”
He also expressed the Trust’s gratitude to four Trustees, Colin Boswell, Phil Collyer, Tony Holmes, and Nicholas Oulton, who retired from the board today, for their service over many years. In addition, Pat Barber and David Low will retire at the AGM in November 2024.

In 2020, we recruited five Trustees, and today’s appointments see that renewal process continue as we strive to excel in the management of this historic site and as part of a vibrant Island community.”
