Gallery 44 in Ventnor welcomes a new exhibition this Friday. Artist Jo Gooden brings her latest body of work, ‘Through my window’, to the gallery walls.
Humans have worshipped, adored, feared and even deified cats since the time of the ancient Egyptians.
Bastet, the feline goddess of domesticity, once commanded that devotion. Centuries later, a cat belonging to Julian of Norwich came to symbolise that all would be well.
Cats continue to hold a place in countless lives today.
Icons and instinct combine
Jo draws heavily on her fascination with Greek Orthodox iconography. She threads that influence through the recurring image of the cat.
Cyanotype, lino print, drawing and text all feature across the collection. Each technique adds a fresh layer to her exploration of the theme.
A window into another world
‘Through my window’ offers a glimpse through the glass into a cat-filled world.
Jo herself inhabits that world every day.
