Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council approves initiatives for enhanced community engagement

At its Full Council meeting held on Monday 14th July, the Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) approved several key initiatives aimed at strengthening community engagement and future planning across the parish.

Highlights of the meeting included the unanimous approval of a grant application from the Isle of Wight Story Festival. The £800 grant will support author sessions in five local schools, reinforcing the council’s ongoing commitment to literacy and community-led education.

Youth consultation
Council members also gave the green light to commission a youth consultation through Network Ryde, which will explore youth needs both within schools and through detached outreach.

The consultation aims to inform future youth service provision and asset use across the area.

Updated Anti-Bullying and Harassment Policy
The meeting also saw updates to several council working party memberships and a renewed commitment to transparency and safety with the adoption of an updated Anti-Bullying and Harassment Policy.

Chair, Councillor Vix Lowthion, said,

“These decisions reflect councilors’ active role in listening to residents and planning for a vibrant and inclusive future in Newport and Carisbrooke.

“Supporting youth engagement and literacy projects is central to that vision, and we will be developing our plans in the coming months.”

2026 National Year of Reading
Discussion continued regarding preparations for the 2026 National Year of Reading. NCCC reaffirmed its support of the IW Story Festival and is now inviting further ideas from councillors to mark the national initiative locally.

The next Full Council meeting is scheduled for Monday 8th September 2025 at 64 High Street, Newport, starting at 6pm.
