Recently-elected Newport Parish Councillor, Lois Prior, has proposed that the parish council should become the first 10:10 town on the Island – and they’ve unanimously given their support to setting up a working party looking into it.
If you live or work in Newport, the Parish Council is also keen to hear from you if you have signed up to the 10:10 campaign.
As part of the process of becoming a 10:10 town, a steering group needs to be set up to include members of the community. They are particularly keen to hear from schools, businesses or other organisations.
If you are proactive in your efforts to reduce your carbon footprint you may be able to help Newport in its 10:10 quest, so please contact [email protected]
The 10:10 campaign, started last year, aims to encourage all members of the community, from individuals, schools, businesses right up to the government, to sign up to reducing their carbon footprint by 10% over the course of a year.
The IW Council and 10:10
You may remember that the Conservative-dominated IW Council recently – for the fourth time – rejected the Isle of Wight becoming a 10:10 Island.
Their reluctance is made all the more confusing, as the Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron, committed the UK government to reducing emissions this year by 10%.
