No Further Action For Man In Arctic Road IncidentIsle of Wight Safer Neighbourhoods West Inspector Terry Clawson said: “Police can confirm a 52-year-old man from Cowes, Isle of Wight arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence was taken to Newport police station for questioning. He was later released from custody with no further action.

“Bomb disposal experts from the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Department (EOD) attended the scene of a suspicious incident at a house in Arctic Road, Cowes, Isle of Wight yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, October 12, 2010).

“It was confirmed that the suspicious object, which had the appearance of a hand grenade, was not a danger to the public.

“Police had received a call from a member of the public at around 11.30am on Tuesday concerning a suspicious object at a house in Arctic Road.

“The road was closed temporarily and houses in the central area of the road were evacuated. Residents were looked after at the Methodist Hall in Birmingham Road, and allowed back to their homes later in the afternoon.

“The Cowes Safer Neighbourhoods team carried out extra patrols in the area last night (Tuesday) to provide reassurance.

“Police would like to thank the community for their understanding and co-operation.”
