Nonsense at Christmas Time: Christmas Tales in Brighstone

Island storytellers celebrate the bicentenary of Edward Lear at storytelling session on Saturday in Brighstone.

Thanks to Sue for sharing details of this upcoming event, which forms part of the Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival. Ed

The Island Storytellers are telling tales amidst the beautifully decorated trees of the Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival on Saturday 8th December from 7.30-9.30pm, in the Wilberforce Hall.

“It’s an open invitation evening to which everyone is invited. You can come with a tale to tell or just sit back and enjoy the variety of stories” says Island Storyteller chairperson, Sue Bailey. “Of course, some of it will be nonsense!” she says.

Bicentenary of the birth of Edward Lear
A strange claim you may think, but apt because 2012 has been the bicentenary of the birth of Edward Lear of ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ fame.

The Island Storytellers decided to use three of his nonsense poems to inspire their Christmas Tree.

You’ll find Jumblies with green heads and blue hands hiding among the branches, a pea green boat nestling among the boughs and one or more curious looking hats that belong to the Quangle Wangle.

“The stories we tell will be mainly Christmas themed, but we might just sneak in a few nonsense poems and limericks throughout the evening. Why not bring your favourite Lear poem to share?” continued Sue.

  1. Nice to be reminded of the Quangle Wangle’s hat, after all these years. I’m sorry I shall be unable to go, but it clashes with the Dollymopps performing in Arreton on the same night, unfortunately. I shall get my Brighstone representatives to attend…
