Thanks to virtual ranger, Matthew Chatfield for this update below on washed up cargo from the shipwrecked Napoili container ship. We noticed that Monks Bay had a fair amount of oil on it on Saturday. That nasty sticky stuff could send the sales of Swarfiga through the roof on the Island if we get much more oil covered debris.
Debris from the container ship Napoili is currently working its way eastwards along the island’s coasts. Tonnes of rubbish has been removed from Brook, Atherfield and Compton. Small numbers of items have already arrived on Ventnor’s shores and more are expected.
Everything is covered in nasty sticky oil – none of it is any good. So if you’re hoping for brand new BMWs to be carried in on the tide you will be disappointed.
The Council is recommending that everyone stays away from the affected beaches and especially these contaminated items for now whilst they clean up. Luckily almost all of the oil is attached to the floating items so cleanup will be a lot simpler than in the case of a free-floating slick.
