Graben from top with big crack in road

Overnight maintenance ensures smooth travel in Ventnor: Latest from Island Roads (updated)

If you happened to see the temporary traffic lights by the side of Newport Road (by the graben) in Ventnor on Wednesday afternoon and were concerned that another route in and out of Ventnor was due to be closed, fear not.

Island Roads tell News OnTheWight that they set up temporary traffic lights to carry out maintenance work, to keep on top of things, for a couple of hours.

The work was carried out overnight to avoid disruption to drivers and bus users.

Emergency works only
The crack across the road that connects Ventnor to Lowtherville (Upper Ventnor) have been visibly increasing over the past few weeks, driving concern that one of the only two ways in and out of Ventnor (excluding the Shute at St Lawrence) may be closed.

Island Roads say they are aware of the changes and are constantly monitoring the cracks, fully mindful of the importance of the access road in and out of the town.

They have also stated very clearly on previous occasions that the only works carried out by themselves or the water, electricity and gas utility companies, whilst Leeson Road is closed, will be emergencies.

Closely monitoring the road
Island Roads told News OnTheWight,

“We continue to monitor Newport Road very closely. Our plan is to intervene as necessary and mindful of the wider network considerations.”
