In an exclusive interview with this reporter today, the Minister for Trade and Foreign Affairs confirmed that negotiations with the Chinese Government are well advanced regarding the leasing of the Isle of Wight to the Chinese.
“They will be taking control of the Island for an initial period of ninety-nine years,” the Minister announced. “Their intention is to establish a base from which to expand their trading and financial ambitions throughout Europe.
“They’ll be paying a nominal rent only, but will in return will develop the Island into a highly modern commercial and industrial hub.
“I must say HM Government are highly excited and expect huge benefits to accrue to the United Kingdom as a direct result.of the arrangement.”
Copycat tactics?
Responding to a comment by this reporter that this was a copycat repeat of the mid-nineteenth century take-over of Hong Kong by the British, the Minister demurred.
“For a start they will not be flooding the South of England with narcotics,” he pointed out.
(For the many of our readers who are unsure of the location of the Island in question it is the one situated just south of Southampton, not the one in the Irish Sea, nor the one where the Scottish battalions go to mull things over and practice their bagpipe marching. The lingua franca is a form of English).
