Pete Holden: Goodbye to an Islander at the centre of the World music scene (updated)

Pete Holden: 4th March 1959 – 27th June 2021

At the end of last month, family, friends and former colleagues heard the incredibly sad news that Islander, Pete Holden, had peacefully passed away.

Pete had suffered a serious stroke the week before, and that coupled with his long-term illness, led to a decision for end of life care.

There will be a celebration of Pete’s life this Friday (23rd July), followed by a service at the Isle of Wight Crematorium (see details below).

Chance meeting
I first met Pete at Isle of Wight Festival many years ago. He was sat on a bench enjoying a pint in the sun out the back of the Kashmir Tent, and looking to do the same, I asked if I could join him.

We got talking and ended up spending a few hours putting the world to rights. He spoke about his involvement with the Womad Festival, and mentioning he was booking acts for Rhythmtree Festival here on the Island, Pete invited myself and Simon along to the event the following month.

‘Putting the world to rights’ continued
Bumping into each other at various festivals over the following years, we got to know Pete more and ‘putting the world to rights’ continued.

When Pete brought the great poet, Dr John Cooper Clarke, over to the Island for a sell-out gig at Shanklin Theatre, we got the chance to meet the man and record this podcast.

A kind and gentle soul
My overriding memory of Pete is his empathy and generosity: He was such a kind man, who always thought of others before himself.

He will be missed by a great many people.

Service and celebration
There will be a celebration of Pete’s life starting at 1pm this Friday (23rd July), followed by a service at the Isle of Wight Crematorium at 3.45pm.

If you would like to attend either please get in touch with Paul Armfield beforehand to let him know – he’ll be able to provide location details for the celebration.

Pete had asked that you do not send flowers. If instead, you would like to make a donation, he chose these charities:
