Phantasmagoria: Four nights of inventive film

This in from Rachel at Quay Arts. In her own words. Ed

Phantasmagoria, a group of Isle of Wight College F6RM students studying AS and A2 Film who, in collaboration with Quay Arts are presenting a series of films to coincide with the Art of Invention season.

Phantasmagoria have collectively chosen three films spanning over a century of cinema. The films, from George Méliès’ A Trip to the Moon (1902) to Martin Scorsese’s Oscar winning film Hugo (2011), explore invention through both form and theme.

The film selection
The first night, Thursday 2nd May, will comprise of George Méliès’ short film A Trip to the Moon screened with a live choral score and James Whale’s classic horror monster film Frankenstein (1931). The sense of horror will be heightened by the theatre being transformed into an eerie graveyard.

In contrast the next film to be shown on 6th June will be Joe Johnston’s iconic comedy Honey I Shrunk the Kids (1989), about an inventor who creates a shrink ray which causes mayhem for his family. The penultimate showing on the 4th July will be Hugo about a young boy wrapped up in a mystery surrounding his father and a robot. On the 100 year anniversary of seismologist John Milne’s death, 1st August, a documentary about his life and work will be screened.

Submit your short film
Budding film makers are invited to submit short films that are inventive in either style or content. The winning film will be shown on Phantasmagoria’s final night of film, 1st August.

Entries should be between one to five minutes in length, in DVD or QuickTime file format and need to be submitted by Friday 5th July.
